So Christmas is bad because it is us forcing our religion down other people's throats so we should call it winter break and eliminate every reference to tradition. Easter is bad too because of religion. The fourth of July celebrates American imperialism. Washington's Birthday celebrates an evil white slave owner. Lincoln's Birthday is no good either because he really didn't want to free the slaves and only did so as a political manuever to keep Britain from supporting the south. Columbus is evil because he came for the sole purpose of slaughtering the peaceful natives of this world who were living a utopian/eden like existence. So what do we have left? Martin Luther King Day and Ceasar Chavez Day. I'm ready to move!!!!
When I was in kindergarten, we'd make feathered headdress cutouts and dance around in a circle to a drumbeat singing "Hi-yi-yi-yi, Hi-yi-yi-yi! We are Indian braves!"

The local tribe here is not so stuck up. Of course since the spanish whipped them first maybe it isn't such a big deal. They actually would come to the school and put on traditional dances in costume. It was pretty cool,

I don't think they did a dance, but DD's kindy class had an indian feast today. They wore headdresses, sat on "buffalo hides" they made from paper, and did some other related stuff.
Tomorrow is their pilgrim feast.

So, should I replace Thanksgiving with "Hate the British" day? Because they made life so intolerable for my ancestors, they were willing to risk life and limb to abandon everything they had and take their chances coming to a new country and starting over again completely from scratch? My ancestors suffered all sorts of crushing poverty and high infant mortality rates, until they finally got a little more settled four generations later, after WWII. What utter nonsense.
Looking backwards is fine - but your kids will like you more if you chose to focus on the good things.

Local Native American leaders add that not everyone in their community sees Thanksgiving negatively, but there is still plenty of hurt that can only be healed by a deeper understanding of our history. "We need to free ourselves so that we can manifest that true love and kindness and compassion that's necessary to heal the wounds," said said Phil Lane, Jr., United Indians of All Tribes Foundation. How about a old concept, poorly understood and rarely used: forgiveness.
Delving deeper into the history of hurt does not bring healing. Only forgiveness for the past and working toward a better future can do that.
