17 Sept

On Sunday last my wife and I went to visit an LDS man who is now dying rapidly from cancer.  We went to wish him a good birthday, which was on Monday the 17th.  His whole family was there for the occasion, and while we were there he talked mostly about his funeral arrangements and some other matters his family needed to know about.  Heck of a way to enjoy a birthdday celebration.  He had cocme to America years ago as an immigrant from Denmark, married, raised a family, and was succesful in business.  As we visited, I reminded him that the next day was his birthday.  He said to me that the 17th of September was the most important day in American history.  "Ya, but you were born in Denmark", I remiinded him.  He replied that the 17th of September is Constitution Day, and therefore the most important day for Americans.  Was I ever surprised, his having been an immigrant from Denmark, that he so appreciated and valued our Constitution.  Our students that are products of our public schools generally do not.  Only when they lose their freedoms and feel the lash of the tyrant will they realize  how fortunate they might have been under our Constitution.

Thanks for sharing Lundbaek. My brother in law is always trying to get me to travel with him to some foreign countries and I haven't gone yet. He always tells me how great they are and that the people are so nice. I always tell him that I'm sure it is a great place but I really don't like the idea of leaving my Constitutional rights at the border (these countries have a history of police and government corruption and have thrown foreign nationals in horrible jails for flimsy reasons before). He has acknowleged that it is a legitimate concern but it's not enough to deter him. But the day he has a problem he'll remember my concerns and wish he had those same protections that so many of us take for granted.

The Constitution? That's the document that says we're all created equally and should pursue happiness, and something about "Give me liberty or give me death!"  Right?

No Ray, that's the Magnum Carta Blanche named after Thomas Magnum and a credit card no one ever used.
