School Clothes

Three of the four girls went back to school, while the fourth starts on Friday in Kindergarten... One of my daughters had a major meltdown before school because she couldn't find her new shirt... which it turned out we'd never really bought her. It was tough to see her go through this major wardrobe crisis. She has a number of shirts that I'd bought her over the summer that she's worn before, but she wanted something she'd never worn before. Anyhow... it was very traumatic for her, and she's gotten to the point where she doesn't throw fits, she just goes up to her room and cries... which makes it harder on daddy... cuz I hate it when the suffer in 'silence'. :)

Anyhow... after giving all the girls Father's blessings she was okay, and I hugged her for a long time and told her that I loved my girl more than all the other kids and that even if all the other kids had new shirts, that I'd want my girl to be different than all the other kids.

I still need to talk with her about her feelings... any suggestions?

Run like she has the plague Ray. She's a girl and there's no reasoning with a girl about clothes.

Maybe we are mean parents, but we don't allow our kids to get emotional over clothing.
There are worse things in life. We care deeply about our children and their feelings, but clothing is a low priority. Now seeing as how we have yet to go out buy new school clothes for our children we just had them (with the exception of the kindergartner and the oldest) go through their closet and pick out something nice to wear.
Our ten year old tries to push the envelope sometimes and she's the one who whines about she needs new this and new that the most often, but even she realizes at some point that it doesn't matter a whole lot in the end.

We make sure of course that our children are clean and not dressed like ragamuffins, but so what if they didn't have brand new clothes on the first day of school? My daughter just solved that problem by wearing something she doesn't usually wear to school.

Plus, considering the cost of clothes these days... that's another reason we don't stress about new clothes in our house a whole lot.

Oh, and Jason you're right, there is no reasoning about clothes with most girls. That's why we just find a way of basically saying, "Get over it."

The district in which I teach has a uniform policy.

Boys:  Blue or white polo style shirt with blue or khaki shorts or long pants (no jeans.)
Girls: Modest blue or white shirt with modest blue or khaki skorts, jumper, or long pants (no jeans.)

Shirts always tucked in, no extreme hairstyles or makeup, no visible tattoos or piercings, etc.

Kinda gets rid of the whole "school = fashion show" cultural phenomenon.

I have been campaigning for school uniforms for 18 years in different school districts! I started wanting to see this when Son1 went to "kindygarten"... and I witnessed how some of the less affluent kids got teased in the Hunter UT area we lived in... there was a HUGE class system, it drove me bonkers... Today having done many years as a HS parent (thank heaven this is my LAST year)... I HATE, honestly... this is one time when that is the ONLY word that fits... what school dress codes are like in this area... At least in our town the school board members are and have been all whimps about appropriate dress in school... They kowtow the weirdest bar-hopping-social-circle pressure which is part of the local "color" of our small town...

CONVERSATION: Ms. Daring are you telling me you WANT to LOOK like a H***** or you are one...??? In greater disbelief I stare and say... "WHAT, you actually want you daughter to look like one too???"... Okay... no, I didn´t actually SAY that... but the judgemental person in me thought it!

BTW... yes..., I have tried to work from the inside, but have been UNABLE to force any change... It seems that when the parents dress as bad or worse than the kids... it just beyond "intervention" time... disbelief.gif

growing up, the night before the first day of school, I'd sometimes lie awake imagining I'd somehow magically get cute new clothes. Sometimes I'd wear the same clothes the next day since I didn't have many.

At the most, we might get one new outfit.
Tell her you love her, not her clothes and that you hope others will value her for who she is and not for what she wears.

One thing let her know as she grows up, she will be able to buy the clothes she wants at whatever store she wants. Tell her she will be able to give away good used clothes and even new clothes to others.

One good movie I recommend is "Children of Heaven", it is a great foreign film that tells the story of a brother and sister who end up sharing a pair of shoes, basically the brother loses his sister's shoes. Since the family can't afford new shoes and not wanting to burden their parents w/this, the brother and sister share a pair of shoes. The entire movie is based upon the events that happen to them. It is a really touching moving-- maybe good for your Family movie night?? I think this movie is great for any child that thinks "only" a 100$ plus pair of tennis shoes will do.

I'll come back and post a link:

Why do you think this is? Do most of you think untucked shirts look sloppy?
Personally, I think tucked in shirts (ie t-shirts or polo shirts) make me feel fatter.
When I was in grad school, their dress code was that unless a shirt was "designed" to be untucked (ie certain types of blouses), it had to be tucked in. So one day I was involved in a small group that met w/one of the directors, it was me and 3 guys. We were supposed to mention any individual suggestions/concerns about the program.

I said I felt that policy of having a shirt tucked in made me feel fat, they just laughed at it. I don't care if it looks sloppier, it makes me feel better about myself to have an untucked shirt. I felt that just because some people like tucked in shirts, doesn't mean everyone should have to dress that way.

Do most of you think untucked= sloppy??

For the most part, I was bad and disobeyed that policy.

We let our children have a little money to choose their clothes. It's not like they're gonna suddenly graduate and be sensible with clothes if they haven't had some practice. We try to enforce strict modesty standards, but my first inclination when my kids squabble over clothes is to read them the downfall of the Nephites from 4 Nephi...

Nita,

Our district has the shirts tucked in policy in an effort to stop the utterly stupid trend of guys having the top half of their underwear showing because their pants are sagging so much.

Thanks Roper that makes sense. I thought they (in my situation) were trying to make everyone look " preppy ". ETA: I totally wasn't thinking along the lines you suggested, yikes.

I hate that low ride pant look look as well as the belly hanging out of your shirt look when girls wear low tops-

Somewhere I recently read (probably here or nauvoo) that BYU pres Rex Lee once did a back to school assembly where he displayed pictures of himself in the outrageous styles to make his point about modest dress.

For whatever it is worth- someone once told me a young man once did that low pant w/underwear look-- and his outer pants actually fell off!

I've never understood the sagging pants thing. It comes from the prisons where they take the prisoners belts away so they won't use them as weapons. Thus their pants sag. So little Billy in the suburbs starts listening to Doctor 2PackSnoop and decides he wants to dress like he's in prison and Billy's mommy not wanting to upset him runs him down to the mall and dresses him up like a prison thug. Satan must be laughing somewhere.

I think it's the modernday equivalent of the guy who wore the trenchcoat and flashed people... there's always the looming danger that your pants will come flying off and you'll expose yourself, and you can always claim that it's an accident, cuz they were loose... and trendy... :)

Forget school clothes. I believe that all children should have the real experience of finding out that they have shown up to take a test and are wearing nothing but their underwear... forget the nightmare... rofl.gif

I try to remember to have our kindergartner pick her clothes out the night before. It only takes a couple minutes, but I swear it saves like 15 in the morning!

We went to get the kids new clothes. Even though none of them are actually going to a school this year. But they're growing out of everything, and it seems like a good excuse...and there were some good sales on Monday. And we actually ending up getting 2/3 of their stuff from the 'school uniform' racks. And you thought it was tough finding modest teenager dresses? Well, WHY THE HECK don't they make skirts or dresses for a FIVE YEAR OLD that cover anything???

I'm all in favor of making the toddler clothes styles up to at least a size 12.

Yeah, I'm not fond of most stuff either... the styles tend to be rampantly immodest... And my five year old likes to show her underwear more than anything else... she's always rolling around on the ground, dress up over her head... needless to say she's not wearing dresses to school.

That's why they make the uniform skirts with shorts built in to them.

So, no one's going to comment on the silliness of Jason wearing a loincloth over his jeans?

Commenting only encourages him to take the jeans off... so no... no comments... trust me, we don't want that...

I was always the kid with dorky, outdated, often ill-fitting clothes. It caused problems for me socially, so now I have a thing about DD being dressed well for school. Of course I do it on the cheap, but I'm thinking I should get over that before it potentially causes a problem.

You could always let her dress herself.

Seriously. And why does Lance have to wear a loincloth, too?

Immodest flatulent horses are a 3rd degree misdemeanor in Bountiful. Just ask mirkwood. Hence, the reason Jason has provided a designer loincloth for his noble steed...

The elementary school two of our kids go to took a vote of parents who were for uniforms. We voted against it as our two younger kids wear a lot of hand-me-downs from the oldest and cousins so we do not purchase much for them in the way of clothing. In addition, from our observations, there is not near as much social pressure regarding clothing in elementary school as there is in Middle School and High School - at least, around here there doesn't seem to be.

After the elementary school got the results of the first parent vote and uniforms lost, they didn't seem to want to accept that vote so they tried again but got the same results.

Our school does an ongoing uniform exchange, so most parents have little cost each year for new unifroms.  It's run by the PTA and done very professionally--lists of available sizes, etc.

In sixth grade I had my own uniform. I had two pair of Brittania jeans (exactly the same) and I'd wear a plaid flannel shirt every day. I was a cowgirl. thumbsup.gif
