GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.
U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.
About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.
"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.
India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people.
Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals.
On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38.
France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people.
"Firearms are very unevenly distributed around the world. The image we have of certain regions such as Africa or Latin America being awash with weapons -- these images are certainly misleading," Small Arms Survey director Keith Krause said.
"Weapons ownership may be correlated with rising levels of wealth, and that means we need to think about future demand in parts of the world where economic growth is giving people larger disposable income," he told a Geneva news conference.
The report, which relied on government data, surveys and media reports to estimate the size of world arsenals, estimated there were 650 million civilian firearms worldwide, and 225 million held by law enforcement and military forces.
Five years ago, the Small Arms Survey had estimated there were a total of just 640 million firearms globally.
"Civilian holdings of weapons worldwide are much larger than we previously believed," Krause said, attributing the increase largely to better research and more data on weapon distribution networks.
Only about 12 percent of civilian weapons are thought to be registered with authorities.

If you hadn't said "joy" in your thread title, I was gonna ask if it was tear of happiness for the 90 who do or a tear of sadness for the 10 who don't.
So, you gun owners, since I doubt that 90 out of 100 really do own a firearm, are all y'alls paddin' the stats by having your own little arsenal? Maybe it is really only like 50 of 100 in our nation own a firearm, but those that do typically own 2, 3, 8, a couple dozen? That would soitanly skew the bell curve!
Val, what's up with the chick picture for your avatar? You've been missing the male bonding sessions again, haven't you?

Is this a subtle hint that we should all go out and buy a firearm? If I need one I think I'll go raid my brother in law's arsenal. He can account for about 4 or 5 people. (You should see the safe he keeps his guns in, it's HUGE).
P.S. What's with the girlie avatar Val? Are you feeling feminine right now?
If my wife can like Sean Connery's voice, I can look at Sarah. Plus, it doesn't hurt that my wife likes her singing as well. My wife and Sarah have a lot in common, beautiful hair, beautiful voice, just plain beautiful, OTOH, I am in love with my wife, not Sarah.
I just watched her concert the other night from the Harem tour in Las Vegas, WOW!
My wife and I watched together and she thought that the thigh boots with Sarah's first costume didn't work. I had to explain to her that the boots were not for her, that they were sexy and it was for the men, not her. Didn't think such things had to be explained, but guess I was wrong! :)

That's right... I couldn't think of who that was. Do you realize she's almost 50? So glad she has the long, curly hair. Maybe this will have to be explained too, but I would say straight hair is not working for her and short hair doesn't work for her, either. But being married to Andrew Lloyd Webber apparently does. teehee...

I am thoroughly convinced that her marriage to Weber was to help launch her career, how else could she explain being married to a guy with his looks?
She is 48! That's okay.

FYI... She has actually been divorced from Webber now significantly longer than they were married...
The uncultured boob that I am, I think I've only seen her sing on TV maybe once (some PBS special), and while she is a good singer, I didn't see anything that made her stand out from the crowd of celebrity type vocalists...
The question is, can she sing while shooting guns and River Dancing?

She has the voice of an angel, as does Celtic Woman (all of them, cept the guy), and Loreena McKennitt, but Sarah is better looking, there is a reason that Loreena's pics are always blurred on her discs.
Sarah is very theatrical, but it is the quality of her voice, the exoticness of her performances. She is far beyond a typical vocalist.

I saw Sarah Brightman on a PBS special where people were singing Broadway tunes. She sang a duet from "Phantom of the Opera" with Antonio Banderas. She does have a lovely voice. Antonio Banderas has a pretty good voice too.
I saw that Antonio thing on youtube. Personally, I like Celtic Woman better. "Specially the blond fiddle player. She's got energy, baby! And like I said, if ole' Sarah wants to cut her hair, she can watch her popularity plummet. It's all the hair, folks. Seriously though, her voice sort of has a ... um... like an "evil" feel to it when she sings really high... I dunno, probably just me. I prefer Celtic Woman. Plus there's more of them, and more is better, right?

I really like Celtic Woman, definitely a pretty group of women, great singing. What I like about Sarah more than some of these others is that she does not do the same old set of songs that so many seem to rehash. She has done some, does others written for her, remakes of past ones, theater, even has written some herself. Sarah sings one of my favorites "Once in a Lifetime" love that song.
Another excellent singer is Haley Westenra, she is with Celtic Woman now, but her solo stuff is good. Sissel is another, a Norwegian singer.
That blond fiddle player, my wife commented that she wanted to brush her hair back to see if she had pointy ears and is an elf.
Charlotte Church never did much for me. Enya fan as well.

Are you saying that guns and celtic women are mutually exclusive?

Somehow the beserker warrior children just kind of wince when I try to imitate it in the family room...
Maybe I can get the YM in the Scouts to take up irish step dancing... that would certainly bring a tear (from laughing) to my eye... yeah, like that would ever happen with this group of arrogant spoiled slackers...
