Lay Hold upon the Word of God

Our Hometeacher shared the following article from the July Ensign article with us this month (he had just come from visiting a friend in the hospital and didn't have his August Ensign with him), Lay Hold upon the Word of God. Following are a three of the thoughts he emphasized. I thought they were quite spot on the money...

The quantity of our study is not as important as the quality.

In our study, it is essential that we liken all scriptures unto us (1 Nephi 19:23). Likening is the process by which we allow the scriptures to transform our character. If our object in studying the scriptures is to enable ourselves to answer questions in Church classes, little lasting benefit will result. Being able to quickly find the scriptural answer to a gospel question is an admirable skill. But of greater worth is to consistently apply the scriptures to our lives and steadily become living scripture.

As we lay hold upon the word of God, it lays hold upon us, guiding our thoughts, words, and deeds, drawing us ever closer to the Great Source of those inspiring words. We need now, perhaps more than ever before, to lay hold upon the word of God so that we can quickly and powerfully overcome the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil and his followers.

Thoughts? What was your impression of the article and what was said?

I often struggle with scripture study being meaningful to me. When a scripture really speaks to me, I really treasure that experience. Even as the years go by, I feel like those scriptures that have jumped out at me our my special scriptures.

I haven't read the article, but WOW! I really like those quotes! Many a scriptorian has fallen into the mists of darkness... in fact, this very idea MrCoco and I talked about during lunchtime today.

I like the comment about becoming "living scripture"... that's just wonderful!! The scriptures are an aid for us, like a means to an end... it's wonderful to read about others' experiences with God, but even more wonderful to begin to have our own. And then to keep them in journals for our kiddos to have... nod.gif

I think in regards to quality and quantity, one should at least set a goal to study the scriptures a little each day. So in that regard, I'd say quantity is very important... now I wouldn't set limits on how much each day, etc... but it should be a daily thing...
