New First Presidency member...

So... is it too soon to start taking guesses at who's going to be the new member of the First Presidency?  Do you think we'll find out at the Oct. conference?

Please. Other places have been speculating since Saturday. So, I guess we can do whatever we feel is not insensitive.

Frankly, I couldn't care less who they put in there, as long as it's not someone who ever uses the phrase "uniform of the priesthood."

Doesn't that rule out Packer, Oaks and Holland?

I suspect there will be an announcement before Conference... Haven't any guesses who it will be. There is much I like about each member of the Q12... I am curious about who the Lord will place in that roll... but not enough to start guessing.

When I was watching the funeral proceeding on BYU-TV On Demand last night, I couldn't help but feel a little sad for Pres Hinckley... He has lost so many of his closest loved ones in the last few years. Since he is older than most of them I know from things my dad said when he was feeling like the last one left of his generation... it effects you in way that you can't imagine.

I hope so.

Oaks grew up in the town where I live; I always take my new eagle scouts over to the eagle scout wall of fame at the county building and show them his name.  And yet, I really don't feel all that comfortable with him.

Can't we please just resurrect LeGrande Richards and put him in there?  Please?  Pretty please?

I certainly hope it's not Elder Lufthansa.  I don't think I could handle a constant diet of widow visits and airline talks every priesthood meeting.

Let's be careful how we are referring to members of the Quorum of the Twelve and The First Presidency, okay folks?

We may not necessarily feel personally endeared to one or the other of them or may or may not appreciate their personalities or speaking styles, but nevertheless sustaining them in their heavy call and duty includes providing the due formal respect the office of one of Christ's special witnesses affords.

Not if you eat our brains first.

BTW, my mom pointed out that you don't necessarily have to be an apostle to serve in the first presidency. There was a time when there were 5 counselors in the first presidency, and one of them was a seventy.

I think its kind of useless to speculate. Sometimes it turns out to be the obvious person and sometimes it turns out to be a surprise to everyone. (Probably even to the one who is called).

For me it would be Marvin J. Ashton. He was the first Apostle that really touched me by the messages he gave on Love. I've since come to see that all of them love, but being a teen at the time he was alive, I was fairly afraid of all authority figures... and there was just something unrehearsed and extra-genuine about his messages especially right before he died that really touched a chord with me.

I like Pres. Oaks, though. I find it fascinating how God works with all sorts of peoples, personalities, and men of means. There have been times when I've needed every sort of apostle to really connect with the lessons I've needed to mature in the Gospel. It's like having twelve great parents, each with their own style.

It gives me hope to know that one is not an automaton in Heaven, but has one's own personality, and is still perfectly good and true.

That's a good point Ray... I felt similarly about Elder Ashton, when I was a newly returned missionary... had a couple of profound moments during some of his talks... There isn't anyone that I think would be better or worse... I just know from past experience that whoever it is I will quickly be soooo grateful to Heavenly Father for placing him in his position of council...

I've always kinda' liked Elder Oaks, too. His first wife spoke to the law student wives at the Y and she was awesome. He reminds me of Yul Brynner and that's a good thing. wink.gif

I think we'll already have the steady diet of widow stories via Pres. Monson.

Elder Holland and Elder Eyring are my two current faves, since Elder Maxwell has left us. I wonder who the new apostle will be... maybe David Stone. Gosh, he gave a talk a few conferences ago that really touched me... the ethos of the Gospel and stuff... man, that was a good talk.

I love Pres. Hinckley and am amazed at his health and ability at this age. If he lives to 100, there will be one HECK of a party thrown, I'll tell you what.

I'm surprised you like Elder Eyring... he's something of a crier (For those of you not reading this board in parallel and haven't seen the other thread... this isn't necessarily a bad thing to me, considering I'm one.) :) I don't think I've ever seen Oaks cry... or get the least big emotional... I'd think Hoss would like that. biggrin.gif (razz... razz... razz...)

You're right, I've never thought of Elder Eyring as a cryer, but if there is one, he certainly is the man... well, the ... Anyway. Something about his crying doesn't bother me. He's totally not planning to cry... it takes him by surprise and he's totally sincere. He also uses humor which you may guess is something I like, too. smile.gif

My vote is for Elder Ballard. He spoke in our ward and I really enjoyed his talk.

Dude. We're not voting. This is an exercise in seeing who's the most in sync with our beloved Prophet. That way, we know who's opinions to hold in higher regard...

Perhaps they will put a single person (never married) priesthood holder into this position. The adult church population is 1/3 single, so this makes sense. I have found no scriptures or descriptions of the callings that forbids this (not a bishop), so it looks scripturally sound.

Elder Holland gets emotional when touched deeply by the spirit.  More than Elder Eyring, I think...  I love to hear ALL the 1st Pres. & Q12 speak...  There is honestly not one member that I get tired of hearing.  I usually listen to the whole previous Conference the month before a new Conference is coming up...

And I just HAVE to say... I can't believe all you guys don't LOVE Pres. Monson's stories as much as I do...  You all must not be good enough or something... wink.gif  Really, I do love his talks... When I was a teenager and then when a young mother he spoke at stake conferences I was attending and really reached me, both times.  I just love his voice...  To me it is very comforting.  heart.gif

Perhaps we can merge them together and have a chainsaw totin' mutant squirrel chasin' singles ward organ playin' doctor in training...

The result could be kind of like a batchelor J. Golden Kimball with a touch of Leonard McCoy-ish schizophrenia due to the lack of space for two "brain patterns" in one head. w00t.gif

Holland and Oaks, wasn't that the name of an 80's pop group?

I really like Elder Oaks, I think he would do a great job. I really like his style.

I also like Elder Holland.

...who likes to personally fly the Quorum & their families to special Quorum of the Twelve Retreats and who also likes to serve his ward by helping physics students with homework problems and  reviewing college application essays while eating Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.

(ps anyone tried the special Reeses Peanut Butter Cups w/Banana Flavor?? Yum!!)
