I read the first couple of paragraphs and immediately the lines of several hymns started coming to mind...
"Hope of Israel..." "Today while the sun shines..." "You can make the pathway bright, fill the soul with heaven's light..." "Welcome, welcome Sabbath morning..." "The morning breaks, the shadows flee..."

My life is pretty free of depression and trauma - I just stand next to a lot of people with copious amounts of it. But I got grief. Maybe no more than the next guy, but I got some.
I've found that the only music that impacts my grief, is music that brings it to the surface and helps me experience it. "Nearer, my God, to thee" "Amazing Grace" "All is well" "A poor, wayfaring man of grief" "Lead, Kindly Light" Enya's "Carribean Moon" (Or whatever Enya song they played at the end of "My Life" when Michael Keaton finally rode the roller coaster up into the sky.)
I wouldn't really call grief a 'beast'. More like a natural process that helps remind us of various important things. Grief is normal, and should be experienced. Paralyzing grief, where you can't get out of bed in the morning, can't hold a job, etc, isn't grief, it's something else turning the grief knob to unhealthy amounts.
Have you heard Israel Kamakawiwo Ole's version - Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World? I think this song is on the Meet Joe Black (Brad Pitt) soundtrack...

i've been listening to some contempory christian music lately, and it's actually quite uplifting. I think the focus on praising god, on his glory and grace is a great reminder in times when I feel really low.
I try to focus on songs that I like, rather than getting too attached to groups, as anything that gets too popular tends to smack of priestcraft... and that makes me squeamish.

I've got that Over The Rainbow version song on iTunes... I just heard it playing in Home Depot one day and thought it was kind of nice, no artsy fartsy Brad Pitt movie about the grim reaper taking a day off.

Artsy, fartsy is not how I'd describe brad pitt, though I don't find him to be especially manly and he doesn't make me swoon or anything like that.
Crap. I came out of the time out room too soon. Don't hurt me, Coco.

Hey, time out is more a state of mind, really. And Brad is not overly manly, I would agree. Although the "look" is ... well, you know. George Clooney sooo has the "look" too.
