Have you considered

Okay, another question from the "newbie".

Have you considered or do you ever consider alternative health care?

Several months ago one of our daughters-in-law developed a major problem.  After several visits to the Dr. and different medications he concluded at one point that the problem was "all in her head".  Yeah right, tell that to a young married couple.  Anyway after several more weeks of the condition getting worse, this Dr. comes up with another conclusion.   She had genital herpes.  That didn't seem right as neither of them had been sexually active prior to marriage.  Nevertheless, he prescribed more meds.  Nothing changed.

Then one day she calls and says "mom, make me an appointment with the gal you see" (I'm 99.9% alternative health care).  I'm wondering who is this girl I'm talking to and what has she done with my daughter-in-law.

So she comes for the appointment, a body scan is done and low and behold, what she has isn't herpes, its one whale of a yeast infection.  In fact its so bad, it has severely affected all of her female organs.  My "friend" did a foot bath detox and then put her on the Rife machine for I think 30 minutes.  The kids spent the night and went back the next day for another detox.

Results?  Everything healed within a week.

So, I'm just wondering what your thoughts are.  I know the Joseph Smith was a big believer in herbs although I haven't had great success with them.  They don't resonate with me so I use other methods.  What have you experienced?

I believe there's a lot of good with some alternative health options. MrCoco's cousin owns a chain of health food stores, is very much into this whole thing, has been back to Wash. lobbying, etc...and claims to have cured herself of cancer... twice. My mom LOVES this stuff. She must be on every mailing list known to the alternative health world. Growing up, we've done cod liver oil, wheat germ oil, whole unpasteurized milk, skim milk, soy milk, never ate red meat at home once that I can remember. She also gets a little "out there" with stuff like Noni juice (banned in Sweden where my sis lives because it's well, a sham) magnetic bracelets and other "stuff" I can't remember right now. She takes kelp, shark cartilege, CoQ10, and whatever else sounds good. On the other hand, she'll see some snippet on the TV on an airplane ride and suddenly stop taking her high blood pressure meds and get congestive heart failure. She gets over that and the AMA/Pharmaceutical conspiracy theory is alive and kicking again. And on it goes...

One thing I cannot deny is this- She is very healthy. She is 82 and looks like she's 62 at the most.

My 10 yo daughter was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus last year at the age of 9. This is very rare and more serious when you're this young. She's having kidney issues right now and will more likely than not need a new kidney before she's 18. When she was diagnosed, she had lymph nodes that were infected with Strep B Pneumonia to the extent that pints of pus were removed from under her arm. It was somewhat painful, but we thought it was a sprain from softball. Had we waited much longer to take her in, she could've gone septic. Her fevers were getting up to 105.8*. (I didn't know you could go that high without brain damage) In a nutshell, I don't think anything but modern medicine saved her life. The ward having a special fast helped, too, I'm sure. But basically the rocefin and other IV antibiotics and the prednisone made a huge difference. My SIL who fancies herself an alternative med expert (and is not) tells me smugly, "If you let her live with me for 3 months, I'd have her cured."

I don't know how good alternative med. is with acute things and obviously surgeries are required for some things. There is a lot to learn about herbs, etc. and I would say if one starts out their life with the word of wisdom and focuses on prevention the entire time, they might possibly squeak through with no need for modern medicine... but I don't know.

It makes sense to me that the Lord would provide everything for our needs naturally but I'm also of the mind that there are so many pollutants and our food now is largely not what the Lord may consider the healthiest way of doing things, so some of this is our own making...

I don't know. Interesting subject.

I do know sugar is BAD!! headbang.gif

Does some alternative medicine work. Sure does. Obviously, modern medicine doesn't have all the answers. The problem I have with so much of the alternative medicine is that there is little in the way of science or imperical study to back it up. Often oversight is lax or non existent. All of this can lead to quackery, false hope, and wasted money. Obviously there are cures in nature and knowlege that past civilizations had that also worked. Science discovers new things in nature all the time. Some of the alternative treatments have been found to be basically worthless when the scientific method was applied even though some people did get better. This is often attributable to the placebo affect.

MDs do make mistakes. A friend of mine's wife was diagnosed with PID. Of course they had no idea that it was an STD but after seeing an LDS doctor they finally figured out she had cancer. The first doc assumed the PID because 99% of the people he sees with those symptoms are promiscuous. The LDS doctor knew better. A friend of mine is an MD and basically has admitted that they are often basically guessing based on the symptoms. If the treatment works they were right, if it doesn't then they try something else.

The science of medicine and healing is constantly changing. New treatments are discovered and others are tossed by the way side as the science improves. I am just suspect of some alternative treatments where the results are not subject to scientific scrutiny nor oversight.

Glad to hear the daughter in law got better with the alternative treatment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Diagnosing people is often done based on symptoms. The exact same symptoms can be casued a myriad of infectious agents, but there is typically a most likely list. If I hear of a "sore throat and pink eye" I am going to jump to adenovirus. There is a very slim chance it will be something else, but unlikely. Family doctors look at what is most likely, emergency room doctors look at what is deadliest and tend to rule those out first.

If symptoms are presented in a never before seen way, most likely it is not biological, but could be malingering or Munchhausens or psychosomatic (which is ultimately a biological problem, just not where the patient experiences it to be).

It is possible for a newly-wed couple who were completely chaste before marriage to have genital herpes. 99% of the time they were not completely chaste before marriage (oh, but that one time doesn't count, does it?). But, if they really were, genital Herpes can be caused by both Herpes Simplex viridea 1 and 2. Type 1 typically causes cold sores on the lips and type 2 typically causes genital herpes, but genital herpes are caused by type 1 about 20% of the time. Type 1 is usually transmitted from parents with a history of cold sores (doesn't have to be active) giving a kiss to their child. So, even if a newly-wed couple are completely chaste before marriage, they could end up with genital herpes.

Alternative medicine, herbs, and supplements are huge industies with powerful lobbies who want to limit government interference and purity standards.

Dr. Grossberg from Saint Louis University School of Medicine has recently written a book called "The Essential Herb-Drug-Vitamin Interaction Guide" which identifies the bad side effects when the 300 most commonly used herbs are used.

House would've found out what was wrong with your daughter... after misdiagnosing her three or four times during the episode, badgering his subordinates and taken some illegal drugs...

Sorry Ray, I'm going to have to block you, your edgy description of house is just to much for children!!

I guess I would rather have a Doc like on House than some of those morons on Scrubs. That Janitor is the only competant one at Sacred Heart.
