Mormon Pets

Do (or your family) you have a pet? What kind is it? Do you think mormons have a special doctrinal obligation to have a certain type of pet? And do you have a year's supply of food for you pet if you do have one? Would you eat your pet in an emergency?

Seeing as our pet only has a 2-2 1/2 year life span anyway, I haven't got a years supply of seeds...in emergency, we'd probably just set her free to be a free range hamster.

The hamster is to stall the kids off from asking for a dog. I don't want a dog. I've already crushed their dreams of ever, ever having a horse... I'd be fine with no pet at all, but... (I also see no doctrinal obligation at all with respect to having a pet.)

Living on a farm we have lots of animals. My two favorites from the past were a tarantula and a scorpion. I caught them in the wild. Great fun, especially when the tarantula escaped and ran across my sisters foot in the middle of the night. Good times!!

I am acquainted with a prepper who bought three rabbit does and named them Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. So you know that person's opinion about eating the pet.biggrin

Usually, planning to let a pet free range is a terrible idea. Dogs form packs that aren't afraid of humans and sometimes will attack them. Pampered pussies aren't barn cats -- they haven't been trained to take care of themselves, etc. I don't know that they would be dangerous, though.

Two cats and as a matter of fact, I do have a year's supply for them.

My younger sister started feeding a stray cat a couple years ago, then it was the outdoors cat until winter, now it has taken over my parents house. biggrin

We have a small dog... about 6 months, and a year supply of food we are rotating. We put it in cans... When I nuy replacement food in a couple weeks I have to decided what brand, since the pet food scares. We also have an aquatic turtle and at LEAST a years supply of his food.

No. She's a pirate. I expect she'll attempt to head for the seas, but AZ is a bit of a trek...

We had a dog until a couple of months ago (Hairy Potter).  He was killed by another dog (probably the pit bull down the street that has since shown up in our backyard again - if only I had been home...).

Now we just have a Rat (at least, my oldest does) and a Parakeet.  I want our next dog to be a small indoor dog.

Our current pets really do not provide enough meat to be tempting.  But, I imagine when you are starving your attitudes and tastes probably change. smile

We have one dog named Zeus. Mutt, but real pretty and looks like a 6 month old German Shepherd. Kinda' dumb, very energetic and is great with the kids.

We have 3 horses. Two are gentle enough for the kids or non-horsey people. One (that will be permenantly "mine" I'm afraid) that is in the process of being trained to ride. She'll be too sensitive for beginners.

No, we would not eat them in an emergency. We have a year's supply of hay for the winter and are growing our own hay starting this year. (Seeded yesterday.)

A doctrinal obligation for having a certain type of pet?? Where the heck did you get that?

What do you think Lehi et.al. did with their camels when they boarded the boat?

I find it interesting how many folk who have pets, don't just have one... but have a ton...

It seems when it comes to pets and human nature, we either have none or a whole zoo...

Or would prefer to have none but give in and have one for someone else's sake.

We have 3 cats, a few fish, and 2 parakeets. Or as i like to sometimes put it, cats and cat food. We have about a 3 month supply of cat food, about a 6month to a year supply of fish food, and about a 4 or 5 month supply of bird food. We love all our pets but especially our kitties.

are you counting the parakeets and fish in your 3 month supply of cat food?

I've never had a pet of my own.  Well, if you count Nemo and Neminem (Latin for "no one, no body" in case you are wondering) that I caught at the Trunk or Treat, and pretty much didn't survive the scooter ride home because they didn't eat anything after that...but they died after a couple days.  And they lived at the boyfriend's house anyway.
