What's Heaven Like to you?

Mahonri's post about what you probably shouldn't share in Sacrament Mtg, and the inspired thread-drift has made me wonder what you think Heaven is like? What do you imagine it will be like for you?

Clearly there's no wrong answers here... A lot of mormons are guilty of espousing the "being gods of your own planet" theory... which I think is based in a lot of conjecture, though certainly the term gods and goddesses is applicable to the final state of exhaltation, I've never felt a desire to over-define or over-imply exactly what we'll be doing.

I guess I don't want to spoil the surprise, but that doesn't mean we can't talk about generalities in Heaven and certainly anyone is free to hold whatever opinion about it...

unless you think there will be firearms in heaven, then you're totally wrong...

Seriously, I think it'll be like the Shire. I love that place. Kids running around... no sickness, no pervert next door, no one gawking at your spouse at Church, hey!! probably no Church! wheeeeee!

I don't know. Just better than what we have now.

If want to take it to the extreme as far as "place of rest", I suppose one could envision it kind of like getting caught up in that temporal string thingee from the movie Star Trek Generations where you get to live out your most peaceful, ideal dream... of course, then you're gonna end up having some bald guy come in and disturb it...

Just think about how beautiful nature is with all of it's imperfections. To imagine perfect, and glory beyond anything we can even imagine or comprehend...Just to think that it exists is wonderful to me! The best part is knowing that we can be with our families forever. Saying good night sure is hard before the wedding, I can't imagine having to say a permanent goodbye afterward!

I sure do hope that there will be beautiful music and freshly-baked smells. mmm.... And we do know that Christ ate with the disciples after he was resurrected. Do you think you can gain weight in heaven, or is everything guilt-free? Because exercising is a lot of fun too. My guess is that there are other ways to progress in a resurrected body, but they are different than here on earth.

Weird to try to imagine or comprehend, but I know we have a loving Heavenly Father, so no needs for me to worry!

Cat, don't you have a bumpersticker that reads, "Heaven is the Holodeck"?

to me, heaven will be like college. Constantly progressing, constantly learning, constantly enjoying time with your favorite uplifting people, no sickness or death.

Ray, no, but I did have one (never put it on a vehicle) that read "Cardassian Military Academy" and I had a button that read "My intergalactic empire is bigger than your intergalactic empire, so there."

Dyany, that vision of heaven (college) would be more like hell to me... Much of my college experience is not one I look back on with fondness...

More time to spend with my children.  And I hope there will still be children.  If everyone is a grown-up, then it won't be very fun.

I imagine that there may be a "college-like" period of intense learning initially, but eventually we'll have to graduate and get down to the real business of Eternity. I think heaven will be a lot of work, and it will be hard work. "Weight of Glory" and all that. We'll be joyful for obvious reasons, and we'll be surrounded by loved ones, but I don't believe for a minute heaven will be a vacation.

Bok, are you saying you're gonna be the bald guy that comes in and tells me my vision of heaven is not reality? I can just see it know... you'll make me do all the hard work and I'll get the privilege of dieing, and you get the honor of having stopped the bad guy... rofl.gif

If holodecks existed, mankind would be wiped out in a matter of a decade. Men would never leave them! Talk about being tempted beyond what you are able to bear!

Anyway, my idea of heaven would be something like a cross between Thomas Kincaid's cottage paintings http://www.thomaskinkade.com/magi/servlet/com.asucon.ebiz.catalog.web.tk.CatalogServlet and the forest/maiden settings by Jonathon Earl Bowser like here http://www.jonathonart.com/ances.html and http://www.jonathonart.com/lumi.html and http://www.jonathonart.com/fmist.html and http://www.jonathonart.com/awak.html and others.

Combine those with the music of Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Celtic Woman, and Sarah Brightman. Let me hunt, fish, shoot, and grill as I will, and my wife/wives (whatever the case may be). Oh yeah!

Oh and skiing, and no one demanding a thing of me, nothing to clean up, a massage several times a weak, and absolute peace and tranquility, unless I am on the range cutting loose.

Now I could go for the Thomas Kinkade concept...

I imagine that there will be work and rest, in proper doses. And I imagine that the work will not be the kind that is drudgery, but rather the kind that makes you feel refreshed and satisfied, like when I built my kids playhouse/swingset.

I imagine we'll all spend a little time telling each other our stories... without the need to be confidential... and we'll all be respectful and there won't be the fear of judgmentalism, because of the Love and faith Christ has put in us and out of respect for the love we all share in Christ. I can't wait to tell all...

But at death, if all life is changed from mortal to immortal in the twinkling of an eye, then how am I ever gonna have homemade elk jerky?  I can't imagine jerky made from textured soy protein to be fit for heaven.

Bok is correct.

God Himself has told us that it will be work.

"For behold, this is my work...."

I don't mind hard work, if I believe in the purpose. In fact I quite enjoy it. It's the hard work that seems to serve no purpose save perhaps selfishness of others that I have a hard time getting behind... Even so, I think the work will be different than what we do here, at least in terms of what we call "work" here...

I am completely willing to work...  In fact I really enjoy working beside my family... I simply want to be pain free... To me heaven won't have ANY pain...  Especially on days like today this concept is what I live for... floating.gif

My theory is that you can cut a slab off the elk, the elk will heal immediately, and then you can season the elk meat with celestial seasonings which will be better than anything ever on earth, dry it out, and then eat it.biggrin

Hey Jase, that's my theory too! Where animals just grow extra limbs you can rip off and eat, and they thank you for taking off their extra limbs...

Of course there will be pain. The pain of children who rebel and make disastrous choices and do evil things to one another and squander their probation. The pain of having unlimited power and choosing not to use it to relieve suffering or prevent injustice. The pain of watching from afar while people screw up their lives for the sake of one moment's pleasure, and having the power to do something about it, but letting them throw away their potential for the sake of carnality and greed.

Bok, you keep up this negative talk and I ain't gonna invite you to my perfectly planned and carried off garden party / barbecue on the other side of the veil... wink.gifbiggrin.gif

Sure, there will be work and there will be pain, but I think these are concepts we are ill equipped to understand from our mortal perspective. Partially because, well, we don't have an eternal view of things right now. Didn't Joseph Smith once say something to the effect that if most people were able to glimpse the glory and peace of the Telestial Kingdom for even a second, they would kill themselves to get there?

In heaven, the innocence and wonder of childhood will be restored.  There will be a perpetual calm and serenity; the dream that you wished would never end will be an eternal reality.

I feel more philosophical than spiritual when I speculate about heaven....don't know why.

Thanks for those thoughts.

That coupled with Love, work and of course the eternal thing called agency.
