Your opinion on Imus?

Yeah, what he said was just plain stupid.  But it's not even close to the misogynist lyrics that reach the far bigger and much more imperssionable audience of urban music.  So why the uproar?  Imus is white.  I guess it's okay to denigrate women if you're a black "artist" - they get protection under "freedom of speech" while Imus loses his career thanks to the PC crusaders.  That doesn't seem right.

Imus is just a fall guy. What he did was inarguably stupid. But Al Sharpton talked about his ratings being "jewed down" and there was no uproar. He incited a crowd to riot and burn down a meat market, yet he still has his own radio program. Jesse Jackson took the side of the black stripper who accused the Duke lacrosse team of rape. He didn't apologize when they were found to be totally innocent.
What Imus did was stupid. But the so called black leaders do worse all the time.

This is the best commentary I've read on the whole kerfluffle, by a black sports writer, no less:

http://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/ny-sppow125168074apr12,0,3616109.column

Key quote:

"Because when we really get to the root of the problem, this isn't about Imus. This is about a culture we -- meaning black folks -- created and condoned and packaged for white power brokers to sell and shock jocks like Imus to exploit. Can we talk?

Tell me: Where did an old white guy like Imus learn the word "ho"?

Was that always part of his vocabulary? Or did he borrow it from Jay-Z and Dave Chappelle and Snoop Dogg?

What really disappointed me about that exhausting Rutgers news conference, which was slyly used as a recruiting pitch by Stringer, was the absence of the truth and the lack of backbone and courage. Black women had the perfect opportunity to lash out at their most dangerous oppressors -- black men -- and yet they kept the focus on a white guy."

I had never heard of him before this controversy erupted.

He definitely said something hurtful, and stupid. I don't know if this is typical of him.

It does seem excessive what happened to him afterwards in order to appease the PC people, but what do I know.

Imus who? Never listened to him, didn't care what he said even though I thought it was horrible, don't think the team knew who the heck he was, watched as the media created a sensation, and now figure he'll get some lucrative book deal. At the end of the day, who cares. I'd rather listen to Ted Nugent.

The Nuge is a Texan. Now, anyway. He's friends with Gov. Perry.

Jason, when you move to Texas, I'll buy you that bumper sticker that reads, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!"

I was vaguely aware of the word "ho", having heard it used decades ago by a black guy or two on the street.  Applying that word to a bunch of girls who play basketball together is poor taste, as is publicly calling Rosie O'Donnell (for whom I personally have considerable contempt) a "fat, slimy pig" and "Tokyo Rosie".  Government should not, in my opinion, have the power to limit such speech.  People should have the integrity to ignore it and shun those who use it.

Ditto to what lundbaek said. I am no fan of Imus, but there is no reason to crucify him over what was said. I could only stomach his show for about 5 minutes. He is about as interesting to listen to as Michael Savage or some of the other radio personalities in my book.

Where has the day of radio shows with folks like Paul Harvey gone?

I've tried to watch on MSNBC, but could not take it long.

The man seemed to be too rude and opinionated for my taste.

His remarks were uncalled for. I'm not going to defend him or cry for him.

I'm not going to miss him.

Comparing him to rappers does nothing for me. If there are two people I can't stand, and one of them has been gotten rid of, I'm not going to want him back just because I haven't gotten rid of the other.

Randy, I'm not saying that I shed any tears over Imus. I had never heard of him before this, and from everything I've heard since, he's not the sort of person that I would have enjoyed listening too.
But surely you must admit that it is a shame that the liberal left can take down anyone they don't like, while they persist in the same behavior they villify in others.

Arbi, that was pretty much my take on the issue.  Never heard of Imus before now.  But I have heard several "artists" say much more offensive things about women.  When will Sharpton et.al. be calling them to repentance?

Much ado about 3 little words.... 1 that shouldn't have been used.

Still waiting for Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton to apologize to the Duke lacrosse players.

I don't think this is going to happen.
This mentality that is is ok to believe white males are guilty before proven innocent, when accused by a black person, has taken a hold on these people.

What Imus did was stupid, but what I think this shows is the ridiculus double standard in our culture today. People who fit under the 'victimized' catagory get a free pass when they are openly racist, but any body else is torn down by the media and destroyed.

Sweet!!!!

Don Imus was basically a fringe radio guy.  Sure there were folks that listened to him but I didn't and still can't find anyone to admit that they did.  biggrin  I always thought he was a bit of a cook which is why this whole controversy surprised me so much.  Outside of his audience, no one really cared about this guy for years and then the media made him a household word. He'll be back and now his audience will be even bigger due to the month of free publicity.  Yea!!!!!

It would indeed be a shame if the liberal left (or the conservative right for that matter) could take down anyone they don't like.  But we still have Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Bill O' Reilly, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, etc.

If they had used the power of government to shut anyone down, that would indeed be alarming.  But this was a business decision by two companies who had every right to decide as they did, who reacted to financial pressures to do so.  There was no noble cause for them to defend, so good riddance to Imus.

Sure, I'm incensed by the left hypocricy.  That is nothing new, and is a mark of shame for them.  But there's not a whole lot can be done about that.  I certainly wouldn't want to counteract their evil by sanctioning evil among their enemies.  Just because liberals don't like Imus is no reason for conservatives to defend him.  If I'm really going to do battle with liberals over hypocricy, it will be over issues that actually matter.

Imus is a conservative? That shows you how much I knew about the guy. I thought Ol Crypty was just a corpse who hated everyone and everything. An equal opportunity bigot!
