Court Blocks Horse Meat Inspections

http://apnews1.iwon.com/article/20070329/D8O5HK900.html

Can someone please explain to me why it is evil to slaughter horses for human consumption?  Sure, it may not be your choice to consume it, but at the basic level, what makes use of the animal as a food source any different than cattle, or swine, or poultry (chicken, turkey, goose, duck), or seafood in its many varieties, or rabbits, or ostrich, or alligator, or frogs, or buffalo, or sheep, or goats, or deer?  I have partaken of flesh from everything off that list but horse, alligator, and goat... and I have properly enjoyed and been grateful for it.

Be advised, that if a slaughter ban on horses makes it through, it will only be a matter of time before groups like the Humane Society and PETA and other "green" groups that would have everyone living as a vegan start working on banning other sources of animal protien.

Too many horse movies and romantic notions of horses talking and being smart. I say, grill em up!

I'm a horse owner. One of the unfortunate aspects of the horse industry is the fact that there are unwanted animals. I think slaughtering is a viable solution for this problem. If there were no "auction option" horse prices would drop and many more animals would be neglected behind the repair garage, etc... I don't suppose it's any more "inhumane" (the details of how they die and their quality of life leading up to it) than the slaughter of beef, chicken, etc. We're a far cry in general from where we need to be in treating animals, I believe.

The horse, as an animal, has more beneficial uses to man than just as a food source. Granted, these days, it is pretty much limited to "pet" or entertainment (racing and riding), but in other less developed nations they are still used for transportation to some extent and as beasts of burden. My autistic son rides horses as one of his therapies.

Coco, I can appreciate what you said, but it didn't really answer the question...

But, still, what is so wrong about use of horse meat for human consumption?

Oh, there was a question? Let's see... What's wrong with eating horses? Is that it?

Nothing, I guess. People eat dogs, too. I'm more bothered by the bad treatment of animals while they're alive.

I have no problem with people eating dogs or cats either. In the pre casino days at the local reservation, one of the things that some tribe members would do would be to stake out a dog and starve it for a couple of days. Then let it gorge itself on rice, slaughter it, and cook it with the rice in it's stomach. Rice dog was very popular at one time. Not my cup of tea but if people want to eat one or wear it's fur I have no problem with it. Animals should not be mistreated (exceptions being vicious wild squirrels and ninja deer) and should be quickly slaughtered if used for food or fur. Of course some take the humane treatment aspect too far and want us to shut down slaughter houses and dairys which is just unreasonable. So pass me the Mr. Ed burger and some tobasco!
