"Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was close to leaving the Republican Party in 2001, weeks before then-Sen. Jim Jeffords (Vt.) famously announced his decision to become an Independent, according to former Democratic lawmakers who say they were involved in the discussions."
No way in Hades this man will be the Republican nominee.

He sounds like an independent voice for change... Good for him. Remember when that one senator fellow (I don't remember his name, it was pretty common... something like Bob Jones or something) left the Republican party? He quoted Mr. Smith goes to Washington when he did this... later I think he rejoined the party...

I wish McCain would have left the party. His views have very little in common with the Republican party. I would rather the party stay a minority party but have politicians who actually follow the party principles than have a large party in the majority filled with people like McCain. I respect his service to this country in the military and the sacrifices he made as a POW but I would almost rather have Harry Reid for president than McCain.
