The calling I want right now is only a temporary calling:an adult leader at Girl's Camp. I've been to camp a number of times as a leader in different wards and stakes, but I haven't been in 10 yrs. Part of not going was because I had girls in the program and I didn't want to make them feel like I was smothering them, kwim. The past 4 yrs I haven't been because I was serving as RS pres and the Stake Pres. frowned upon letting RSPs go, he figured we had enough on our plates. Well, I now teach Valiant 9 and I'd love to go to camp. I already told the YW pres, she was pretty excited because she has a hard time finding anyone who wants to go since most don't have family near to help watch kids at home. But, I'm sitting here thinking of all the neat things to do at camp with the theme the stake has chosen. If I don't go, I'll be ok, but I'd like to go.
After our ward was realigned, our ward was severly understaffed, and I got the calling as Ward missionary, which I was excited to do, but I was also the Cubmaster for three to five wards of cubscouts, and I really didn't want to give that up, cuz it'd been such a good calling on many levels for me personally... I asked the Bishop if it would be okay if I stayed in the calling and wasn't released. He was overjoyed by this.
I would suggest that you say something like, "I hear that the girls camp director calling is open right now. I respect your authority, and I wanted to let you know that I would love to do this calling, do you think you could pray about it?"
Okay that sounds kinda bossy... but you know what I mean...
If ye have a desire to serve, ye are called to serve.

Ray, I don't want to be Camp Director. I just want to go as the adult leader from my ward and the YW pres has already turned my name and a couple other names in to the bishop. YW pres said the bishop wants to talk to the sisters that she recommended and then he turns the name in to the Stake. I guess the call comes from the stake as a special assignment since you are not neccessarily with any of the girls from your own ward, they have the girls divided up by camp level.
I want to be in the library. Then I can be bossy, grouchy, and unhelpful! Kind of like I am now! I think it is OK to volunteer for some things but to actively seek a calling probably isn't a good thing. Volunteering for youth and primary programs is different than trying to become the bishop by compagning for the position.
Well, got a ph call from the bp asking me how I felt about Girl's Camp, etc. He said they will be talking and praying about the names he was given by the YW pres. He was just calling all the sisters to see where they're at in life and if they're willing/able to go. So we shall see if I'm going to get to go to girl's camp.
At some point in the next 18 months, I'm going to sit down with my Bishop and ask him to pray about where he wants me to serve. I may offer that I'd be happy to teach in the high priests or in primary or with the priests quorum or wherever the Lord wants me to serve at that time.
I have a wonderful Bishop who is close to the Lord. I have no doubt that he will receive revelation for me from the Lord. It will be fun to see what is next.

I would love to be the preparedness person, but the branch pres. thinks I am a "bit too prepared". I don't believe that having elderly ladies in charge of preparedness is the best, but he is in charge so I defer. I have not so subtly hinted though about it.

Lo, there I see my mother, my sisters, my brothers Lo, there I see the line of my people back to the beginning Lo, they call to me, they bid me take my place among them In the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live...forever
Well, the phone call from the High Council member came tonight. We're meeting about 15 minutes before church tomorrow. I already heard from the bishop that my name was approved by the stake, it was just a matter of the SP assigning someone to talk to me since our regular HC member assigned to our ward has been out of town for a month.
Wait and see if what I want is the Lord's will. Unlike Valhalla, I've got it now, (or will tomorrow when I'm sustained) as the Welfare/Emergency Prep Specialist.
I have only ever really wished for during my life is one that I also knew (from the time I was aware there was a calling like that, and started wanting to do it...) that I was not capable physically, because the effort and demands are too great... someday I hope they need that calling filled in the eternities when my body is perfected. It would be the greatest joy for me to serve in that capacity... It's not really a visible calling, it more of the "behind the scenes but very critical" type, (one of those unsung makes others look good callings) but it takes a lot of time and energy of which I don't have. It IS just the type if thing I like to do, because it doesn't call attention to you...
I have served in more callings than I can remember and each seemed to be the one I needed at that time, so I have never felt the need to pray for one... Mostly I seem to teach teens... several times I have taught adult classes, which is my least favorite, because I feel other have so much more to teach than I do, and I dislike being in front of my peers... Still the Lord always seems to help me prepare in advance for what is coming in both hubby's and my service futures, and qualifies my efforts, beyond my own capability. Once I get a calling I tend to keep them for quite a while, 2-4 years in one calling over the last 20 years.
My favorite calling of all time is nursery... and I enjoy teaching in the junior primary aged classes.
That's very cool mirk, about your new calling... our specialist is the fire chief here in town and a really good man. He and hubby served in a bishopric together a few years ago for a short while... we have sons the same age, so we know his family pretty well... His wife is an inspiration to me in her faith and patience with all kinds of people...
He has done much to help coordinate our stake's efforts, which have been pretty extensive... In general the plan and application for getting the word out about practice emergencies has worked well... getting individual members to do their best to prepare themselves for emergencies is harder though... as we often see.
