New Hope Ministry?

I had a nice dinner with a recently baptized friend of mine. He said that he's loving the new lds.org, but said that the other day when he went there he got a popup from something called the "New Hope" Ministry, or something like that (I forget the exact name) which is an antimormon ministry. This surprised me, as I would think the church computer portals and equipment would be more secure... I really need to learn more about computer security... sigh...

Did someone hack into any of the LDS websites? Anyone hear of this?

I haven't heard of it but it is a little disappointing.

As we move forward, the Korihors of the world will continue to rear their sad, pathetic, depressed, ugly heads.

I don't think it is the Church website.  Sounds like adware or spyware of some kind pushing advertising based on visited websites.

The answer is absurdly easy - your friend has a spyware infection. Many forms of spyware will scan what websites you're going to and pop up ads related to what you're viewing. So New Hope Ministries is not only anti-mormon but they associate with spyware producers. The anti-christ indeed. Tell him to go to download.com and get adaware. Or, if he wants something beefier and is willing to pay money, go to www.webroot.com.
Of course, certain forms of spyware cannot be removed without formatting your hard drive and reinstalling the system software. Actually, some won't even be purged then.

More than likely the adware/spyware can be removed with one of the programs mentioned by arbilad.  There are extreme cases where reformatting and reinstalling everything would be necessary.  The key is to keep such software out after it is cleaned up.

True, more than likely those programs will do the trick. But there are cases where the spyware modifies certain system files, such that the spyware removal programs can neither detect or remove the spyware. There was even a case where a spyware program wrote itself into the non-volatile memory in a video card, so even if you reformatted the hard drive it was still there.
You want to be very careful what you download. The programs that track what you view and show you ads are one of the more benign versions of what can happen to you. Did you know that it's possible that, at this very moment, your computer is acting as a porn server? Your computer may have been turned into a "zombie", which means a computer that has been secretly taken over by hackers and can be used for their nefarious purposes. For instance, it is difficult to track down a child pornographer if he is hosting his images off of your computer. Or a hacker could have taken over your computer for the purpose of building a network of computers to use to shut down certain websites. After shutting down the website in question, they extort money from the company in order to stop the attack.

Here's an article I read yesterday... It's a very very thorough discussion of a trojan which is a form of spyware that infects your computer, with malicious intent, also known as malware. Anyhow it's very interesting stuff... and infuriating if you read all the wya through it. It's a tough article to understand if you've not had a bit of training in networks and security, but for all you computer geeks out there...

"Hijack this" and the associated forum experts can help root out some of the bad stuff that ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster, and such can't get. It's also still free.
