True, more than likely those programs will do the trick. But there are cases where the spyware modifies certain system files, such that the spyware removal programs can neither detect or remove the spyware. There was even a case where a spyware program wrote itself into the non-volatile memory in a video card, so even if you reformatted the hard drive it was still there.
You want to be very careful what you download. The programs that track what you view and show you ads are one of the more benign versions of what can happen to you.
