Proper Police Purpose

I found this in News of the Weird:
For two months late last year after a pair of convicted murderers escaped from Sudbury prison in England, the local Derbyshire police refused to release their pictures. According to the police, "Photographs of named people that are in police possession are classed as data, and their release is restricted by law" to instances where there is a "proper policing purpose." Derbyshire authorities said that since the escapees had probably left the area, there was no such purpose, and the photographs should be kept confidential. [Daily Mail (London), 1-5-07]

It's almost as if the police want the killers to escape. I can understand not releasing pictures of an alleged killer who is still facing trial. At least in the US, you're innocent until proven guilty. But these are convicted killers. Doesn't the public have a right to know?

I think it probably has to do with the difference in privacy laws.  Laws concerning personal privacy and related data are vastly different in Europe than here.  They are also a lot stronger in scope.  It could be the authorities didn't want to risk any case being developed against the two of being thrown out of court simply because their privacy had been violated.

Yeah, odd...

Reminds me of how some police departments and newspapers have stopped listing the race of wanted or arrested individuals.  You can't say that the police are seeking a 6 foot 180 pound black male wearing denim and a white t shirt.  They now leave out the black part.  Why?  Fear of not being politically correct.

For over 20 years now whenever I've been asked to write down my race on any document I have written "Human"... even my children's birth certificates.... seems the nurses always change it to caucasian.  On our marriage certificate for my wife's race I put "Freckled".  We always laugh about that.

Until we stop categorizing folks into races, there will never be an end to racism.

Couldn't the police figure out a shading system?

Shade 0 could be Albino

Shade 10 could be African Black.

"He was attacked by a gentelman who was just over 6' tall with black hair, a bones and cross tatoo on his neck and was shaded between a 7 and 9."

Wouldn't that work?

Course then folks would cry "shadism".

My 8th grade history teacher was named Mr. Shade... and he used to "fake" wipe his nose with his tie to gross the girls in the class out...  That was definitely a "shadism"

I like the gospel perspective, that we are all children of our Heavenly Father. Of course, certain races typically are more prone to certain things, but I think that has more to do with culture than race. For instance, asians typically value education very highly. But that's not a genetic trait. Their culture encourages it. But since, in many cases, culture and race coincide, people can confuse the two.
