West African Nation Lays Claim to Whoopi

http://apnews1.iwon.com/article/20070207/D8N52AH80.html

At first when I started reading this article, I was thinking how funny... let them have Whoopi, we're tired of her...

But, then as I read on, I thought... this is really kind of neat.  Wouldn't it be kind of neat to track your ancestry back, just based on DNA, to the area(s) your ancestors came from?

I wonder how that would be done, as most of us these days are mutts, genetically speaking.

ETA... So, Oprah is of decent from tribes in Liberia, Whoopi from tribes in Guinea-Bissau... I wonder, did they try and find where Michael Jackson was from, or was the DNA found to be alien?

On Friday, at our Institute, we are having what is called "DNA-Day".  They've been asking us for months to get our 4 generation Family trees turned in as best as we can, and then on Friday they will be taking mouthwash swabs and they will be creating a DNA database.  I don't know all the info, and our Friday devotional will be devoted to it, but I won't be able to go to because I have my mechanics of solids class.  But I will be participating, but I was a little wary at first because my boyfriend had me watch the movie Gattica (totally creepy!  But he liked that the main theme is that the human spirit can't be messed with).  I'll probably find out more about it all when I actually give them my DNA.  What it has done is gotten a lot of college-age students interested in their family history (especially since the Senior missionaries give us brownie sundaes for turning in our family trees.

RE:DNA projects

My wife and I gave blood samples and our pedigree charts about three years ago to the group from BYU.  We still haven't heard anything back from them but a global human DNA database could be a cool thing.
